GT Nexus Founder Joins Board of Directors of Transformational Supply Chain Company Mercado
Tags: Mercado, Launch, Board of Directors, GT Nexus
GT Nexus founder and supply chain industry veteran, John Urban, has joined the Mercado board of directors.
“There’s unfinished business in this industry,” Urban said. “We built a great company in GT Nexus, and it will continue to grow and do well. The fact remains, however, there are still companies and people who are not using advanced technologies that could give them true value and results in their supply chain, which is a huge disadvantage. Newer platforms, like Mercado, are able to fulfill that demand and provide solutions in ways not previously possible.”

Urban began his career working in the international supply chain, so his history in international trade is strong. When the internet boom hit in the late 90s, Urban saw technology as the solution to the many supply chain problems that companies were facing.

“During the internet boom, technology companies had the ‘answers’ but were having difficulties finding the specific problems to address,” Urban said. “I was in a place where I was able to see, hear, and touch all the problems daily, and I had the operating background to help resolve them.”

GT Nexus is a supply chain management system founded in 1999 and was sold to Infor in 2015 for $675 million. Since then, Urban has sought out other promising technology companies in the supply chain field to support and was impressed with how Mercado was innovatively tackling an industry-wide issue with the expertise to tackle the touch challenges using modern technology.

Mercado CEO and co-founder Robert Garrison views GT Nexus as the pioneer in global trade management. Urban’s presence on the Mercado board of directors will help establish a strong global trade foundation and add further experience to the company's cause as it expands into the international supply chain space.

“John is literally an 'urban legend' in the supply chain industry,” Garrison said. “His integrity, industry experience, and leadership were integral to GT Nexus’ success. We are excited and proud to have him on the team. I am confident that John's vision and expertise will serve us well as we look to transform the global supply chain industry.”

Urban is a sought after expert in the space and advises several SaaS (Software as a Service) companies, however he saw something special with Mercado. Most notably in its methodology to bring advanced technology to market, with a low cost structure to help international businesses better succeed in a digital age and bring answers to what he sees as an industry in need of technology, vision, and expertise.

“I’ve spent the last 20 years focused on the supply chain and platforms that enhance planning, visibility, and control,” Urban said. “Changes in global trade, market dynamics, and business competition are causing customers to demand more, and ever-advancing technologies are enabling new companies to rapidly enter the market to meet that demand and replace legacy platforms and systems that can no longer keep up. Mercado is built for the demands of the modern supply chain.”

The inaugural board of directors meeting will be held in January, where Urban will join both Garrison and LiveOak Venture Partners principal Mike Marcantonio to continue to map out the future of the digital international supply chain.
