Thinking Ahead Part III: Complicated Complexity

Dallas-based startup empowers businesses to optimize international trade.
Following are some of the complexities to consider when planning fall, back to school, and holiday seasons.

COVID-19 complicates all three by a large factor, due to demand forecasting uncertainties.

  1. The International ordering process is complicated (see chart).
  2. Suppliers support many clients, so restarting production isn’t a single thread process for them. Each of their clients will have different requirements, ordering patterns, and expectations.
  3. Imported products are made to order, and each of the suppliers in turn has related dependencies on their suppliers (who may in turn have additional suppliers). This intricate orchestration may cause delays, discrepancies, and disarray for your supplier as they will all come back online at a different cadence, depending on their unique circumstances.

The shut down of the production engine was very painful and starting it back up again will also be challenging. The key is constant collaboration with all the effected parties to ensure everyone is on the same page throughout this crisis.

Does anyone have a best practice to share that may help ease the burden?
